Travis Kelce & Patrick Mahomes lead their Chiefs teammates onto the field against the Chargers

Ahead of their crucial divisional clash with the Los Angeles Chargers, the Kansas City Chiefs wide receivers made a special gesture to honor their leader and veteran tight end, Travis Kelce.

The Chiefs’ wide receivers, led by rookie standout Rashee Rice, donned custom t-shirts paying tribute to Kelce during pregame warm-ups on Sunday.

According to Tracy Wolfson of CBS Sports, Rice, who has emerged as the Chiefs’ top receiving option this season, took the initiative to create the t-shirts in recognition of Kelce’s mentorship and leadership over the years.

“It was a way to honor a guy who’s mentored all of us,” said Rice. “Kelce has been the heart and soul of the receiving game for so long.”Jason Kelce Reveals What Makes Kansas City Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes & Travis Kelce So Good Together - Athlon Sports

Despite a strong 3-0 start to the season, the Chiefs have not seen Kelce at his usual level of production. Through the first three games, the 34-year-old tight end has managed just eight catches for 69 yards. This marks a continuation of a dip in his production, which began in 2023 when he narrowly missed 1,000 receiving yards for the first time since 2015, finishing with 984 yards. However, Kelce still played a significant role in the Chiefs’ Super Bowl victory last season.

The Chiefs’ offensive shift in 2024 has been largely due to Rice’s breakout performance. In just three games, the second-year wide receiver has posted 24 catches for 288 yards and two touchdowns, establishing himself as one of the NFL’s most dangerous receiving threats. Rookie Xavier Worthy has also contributed with 81 receiving yards and one touchdown, while JuJu Smith-Schuster has added another score to the Chiefs’ diverse passing attack.

While Kelce’s reduced role has raised some eyebrows, there is no doubt that he remains an essential piece of the offense. “We all know that Kelce will bounce back,” said Rice. “He’s still a huge part of what we do. We just wanted to make sure he knows that we’re all behind him.”

With Derwin James suspended for the Chargers, Kelce may have a chance to break out against Los Angeles, a team he has historically dominated. The Chiefs will look to get him more involved, especially over the middle of the field, where Kelce has consistently excelled.

As Rice and the younger receivers continue to draw more attention from opposing defenses, Kelce’s resurgence could be just around the corner. But for now, the Chiefs’ wideouts are making sure their tight end knows he is still the leader of the pack.

The Chiefs, now poised to improve to 4-0, are gearing up for another potential Super Bowl run, and Kelce’s leadership—both on and off the field—remains critical to their success. Fans will be watching closely as the offense works to reintegrate their future Hall of Fame tight end into the game plan against the Chargers.
