Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes surges past Tua Tagovailoa as MVP favorite after 6-1 start

After Tua Tagovailoa and the Miami Dolphins fell to the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday Night Football, Patrick Mahomes emerged as the frontrunner in the NFL MVP race.

The reigning MVP took the top spot after leading the Kansas City Chiefs to their sixth consecutive victory.

According to FanDuel Sportsbook, Mahomes now leads the MVP odds with +240, putting him significantly ahead of Tagovailoa, who sits in second place with +450.

Mahomes’ rise to the top came after a dominant performance in the Chiefs’ 31-7 win over the Los Angeles Chargers.

He completed 76.2% of his passes, throwing for 424 yards, four touchdowns, and one interception, finishing with a stellar 129.5 passer rating.

On the season, Mahomes has completed 69.5% of his passes for 2,017 yards, 15 touchdowns, and six interceptions. He currently ranks fourth in the NFL in completion percentage, third in passing yards, and is tied for second in touchdown passes. Perhaps most importantly, his Chiefs hold the best record in the AFC.Patrick Mahomes' instant reaction to scary Tua Tagovailoa injury

Meanwhile, Tagovailoa and the Dolphins struggled against a tough Eagles defense, falling 31-17. Tua completed 23 of 32 passes for 216 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Despite leading Miami to a 5-2 record, the Dolphins have yet to defeat a team with a winning record this season. Tagovailoa has completed 71.2% of his passes for 2,092 yards, 15 touchdowns, and six interceptions, putting up similar numbers to Mahomes but falling short in the MVP race due to Kansas City’s win streak and overall dominance.

Following Mahomes and Tagovailoa in the MVP race is Jalen Hurts, who also holds +450 odds after the Eagles’ victory. Lamar Jackson, fresh off a statement win over the Detroit Lions, is in fourth with +700 odds, while Josh Allen trails with +1,000 odds. Brock Purdy has dropped to +1,400 odds after recent setbacks.

Mahomes’ consistent excellence, coupled with the Chiefs’ continued success, has given him the edge in the MVP conversation as the season reaches its midpoint. The reigning MVP will look to maintain his lead as Kansas City continues its march toward another postseason run.
