Brittany & Patrick Mahomes were so hyped during Kansas City current’s season opener

The Kansas City Current, backed by star power from the ownership group headlined by Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and his wife, Britney, kicked off their 2024 season in unforgettable fashion.

The National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) team made their debut in the newly built CPKC Stadium, the first sports venue in the United States constructed specifically for women’s professional sports, with a capacity of 11,500 fans.

The season opener on Saturday was a thrilling affair, with the Current charging ahead to a 5-2 lead against the Portland Thorns.

Despite a late comeback attempt from the Thorns, the Current held on for a dramatic 5-4 victory, securing three points in the standings and igniting excitement among the home crowd.Patrick and Brittany Mahomes Celebrate New Kansas City Current Stadium | Us Weekly

Patrick Mahomes, energized by the atmosphere, compared the experience to playing at Arrowhead Stadium, the home of the Kansas City Chiefs. “It’s been remarkable to be in this stadium and see the fans. I feel like I’m at Arrowhead,” Mahomes said before the game, highlighting the electric vibe inside CPKC Stadium.

Britney Mahomes, who played collegiate soccer at the University of Texas at Tyler, has been a key figure in the ownership group since she purchased a stake in the franchise in December 2020 alongside Angie and Chris Long. Patrick Mahomes joined the ownership group himself in 2023, further cementing the couple’s deep commitment to advancing women’s sports in Kansas City.

While pop sensation Taylor Swift, a close friend of the Mahomes family, wasn’t present at the game due to her ongoing Eras International Tour, there’s still hope that she could attend a future match. The Current’s season will feature 12 more home games, running until early June before taking a break for the 2024 Summer Olympics, and resuming from late July until November.

As the Current celebrated their opening win in front of a packed and passionate crowd, it marked a promising start to the season and a historic moment for women’s sports in Kansas City. With a state-of-the-art stadium and enthusiastic ownership, the Kansas City Current are poised to make waves both on and off the field.
