Britney Mahomes, wife of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes, has stepped up to defend her new friend, pop icon Taylor Swift, who has faced criticism from NFL fans ever since her relationship with Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce went public.
Britney took to Instagram to share her thoughts, posting a clip of NBA legend Charles Barkley calling out Swift’s football critics as “losers” and adding her own commentary, “Let them know.”
Barkley, known for his outspoken personality as an NBA analyst, weighed in on the backlash Swift has received for her frequent appearances at Chiefs games.
“If you’re screaming at Taylor Swift, saying she ruined football, you’re just a loser,” Barkley said during an interview. Britney Mahomes echoed this sentiment, showing her support for Swift amid the criticism.
Since late September, when Swift’s relationship with Kelce became public, the singer has been a regular fixture at Chiefs games, often caught on camera cheering for her new beau. While many fans have embraced the pop star’s presence, some have voiced their frustration, accusing the media of focusing too much on Swift during broadcasts. Despite the criticism, Swift addressed the issue in a recent interview with Time Magazine after being named their Person of the Year for 2023. “I’m just there to support Travis,” she explained, adding, “I have no awareness of if I’m being shown too much and pissing off a few dads, Brads, and Chads.”
While Swift’s appearances at NFL games have sparked some discontent among a vocal minority, they’ve also led to a significant boost in TV ratings and viewership, with many fans tuning in specifically to catch a glimpse of the superstar. The NFL has seen a surge in attention from Swift’s massive fan base, leading to increased merchandise sales, including a spike in demand for Travis Kelce’s jersey.
Barkley highlighted how this level of interest is nothing new for events like the Super Bowl, which draws millions of viewers who may not normally watch football. “When it comes to the Super Bowl, people double the audience for all sorts of reasons—the halftime show, the commercials—so now people are upset just because they don’t like Taylor Swift or the fact that she might not be a ‘Trumper,’” Barkley said. “I can guarantee that all this noise wouldn’t be happening if she were wearing a MAGA hat.”
Britney Mahomes has also faced her share of social media scrutiny, particularly after the Chiefs’ AFC Championship win over the Baltimore Ravens. Following Kansas City’s 17-10 victory at M&T Bank Stadium, Britney was filmed asking a stadium employee where to go, while rotating her finger in a circular motion. Her behavior was called out online as “high horse” by critics, who accused her of acting entitled.
In response, Britney posted a cryptic message to her own social media account, seemingly addressing the controversy. The quote read, “I take rumors as a compliment. The fact that you’re bringing my name onto tables I don’t sit at shows your obsession. Stay bothered.”
Britney, 28, married Patrick Mahomes in March 2022, and the couple shares two children together. Despite the public scrutiny, she has remained vocal in defending her friends and family while maintaining her unapologetic approach to online criticism.
With both Swift and Britney continuing to draw attention both on and off the field, the Chiefs remain at the center of the sports and entertainment world, further cementing their place as a cultural phenomenon.
