Will Smith once caused a stink on the set of “Men in Black,” according to director Barry Sonnenfeld.
During his guest appearance on the “Let’s Talk Off Camera” podcast with Kelly Ripa, the filmmaker joked about Smith being a “farter” when asked to reveal the “No. 1 crazy story” he experienced while working on the beloved franchise.
Sonnenfeld began telling a story about how Smith and co-star Tommy Lee Jones were filming the iconic scene where their car transforms into a flying vehicle, zipping through a New York City tunnel upside down.
Shortly after the two actors were placed upside down inside the “hermetically sealed” chamber, Smith apparently alerted production that they needed to stop.
“I say, ‘Roll camera,’ and I hear Will Smith go, ‘Oh, Jesus. So sorry, Tommy. So sorry, Baz. Get the ladder,’” recalled Sonnenfeld, who directed all three of the “Men in Black” movies.
Jones then began assuring Smith, “No worries, Will. Don’t worry, Will.”

“Anyway, I don’t know what’s going on, so we race the ladder over. Tommy reaches his leg out as the ladder is coming over, races down the stairs. And what happened was, Will Smith is a farter. It’s just, some people are,” Sonnenfeld told Ripa on the podcast.
“You really don’t want to be inside a very small hermetically sealed space with a Will Smith fart. You don’t even want to be sitting next to him at the Disney Ranch.”
Ripa then asked Sonnenfeld if the flatulence affected the rest of the production, to which he joked about how they had to pause filming due to the stink.
“We evacuated the stage for about three hours,” she shared, laughing. “He’s a lovely guy, just, he farts.”
Smith has yet to respond to Sonnenfeld’s candid confessions.
A rep for the actor did not immediately respond to Page Six’s request for comment.
