Dallas Cowboys Consider Cutting $57.5 Million Wide Receiver in Salary-Cap Saving Move

Ever since the Green Bay Packers surprisingly eliminated the Dallas Cowboys, the team had to assess how it could improve for next season. Unfortunately, one of the first moves that can potentially happen is letting Michael Gallup and his $57.5 million contract go.

During the regular season, the Cowboys put on a dominant performance by rising to the top of the NFC East division with a 12-5 record. This gave Dallas the top seed right before the playoffs started.

Despite having one of the NFL’s best offenses and defenses, the Cowboys fell in spectacular fashion to a Jordan Love-led Packers team. Even though they faced the league’s youngest roster, Dallas became the first team to lose to a seventh-seeded squad ever since the bracket expanded during the 2021 playoffs.

Now, during the offseason, the front office will have to assess how to build a better roster surrounding Dak Prescott. Along with targeting key players in free agency or the draft, it seems that letting Gallup go will be one option Dallas will explore.

Why The Dallas Cowboys Must Let Michael Gallup Go

Michael Gallup will play a big role in the passing game when he returns to the field following ACL surgery.

As seen in the past season, Gallup isn’t the player he used to be. Aaron Schatz explains why keeping the wide receiver will be detrimental to the Cowboys in his article for ESPN:

“Last season, he was the clear third among the Cowboys’ main receivers. He ranked 59th in receiving DYAR out of 81 qualifying receivers. By comparison, CeeDee Lamb was third and Brandin Cooks was 28th after coming on strong in the second half of the season.

A regular cut of Gallup would leave a ton of dead money on the Cowboys’ cap. But a post-June 1 cut would give the Cowboys $9.5 million in extra cap space with $4.4 million in dead money. That extra cap space would help the Cowboys, who are currently $20 million over the cap for 2024,” Schatz wrote.

That extra breathing room will prove to be useful when Dallas moves in on key guys in free agency or to retain important players in the current roster. In any case, it seems Gallup’s time with the Cowboys is going to be numbered.
